Connecting a bank account

How to connect a bank account, what Vault can and cannot do with it, and what to expect afterwards.

What a connection actually does

When you connect a bank account, Vault reads your account details, balances and transaction history. That is all it does.

Vault cannot move money. It cannot initiate payments, transfer funds, or change anything in your bank account. The access is read-only and there is no way to make it otherwise.

You also never give Vault your online banking password. You authorise the connection with your bank directly, through a licensed open banking provider or your bank's own app.

Before you start

Bank connections require a paid plan. On the Free plan you can still add accounts and enter transactions manually, but you cannot connect a bank.

One connection can cover several accounts. If your bank issues you three cards under one login, that is one connection, not three.

Guides for your bank

The connection steps differ a little depending on your bank. Pick the guide that matches yours.

Your bank

How it connects

Guide

Monobank

Directly. You approve access in the Monobank app on your phone.

Banks in Europe

Through Enable Banking. You sign in on your bank's own page.

To check whether your bank is supported, see Supported banks: the full list by country. Not there? See If your bank is not in the list below.

How to connect

  1. Open your workspace dashboard.

  2. Click Add account, then choose Bank.

  3. Choose your bank's provider and the date to import history from.

  4. Confirm access with your bank: on the bank's own page, or in your banking app for Monobank.

  5. Back in Vault, choose the accounts you want to add. They appear on your dashboard straight away.

The first import brings in your transaction history. How far back it goes depends on your bank — some hold two years, some only a few months. Depending on the volume, the first import can take from a few minutes to longer. The guide for your bank has the exact steps and timings.

How often data updates

Vault refreshes connected accounts automatically. How quickly a new transaction appears depends on the bank: with Monobank usually within minutes, with European banks within a few hours.

If a balance looks stale, check the status on the account card before assuming something is broken.

Pending transactions

Card payments often arrive as pending before your bank finalises them. Vault shows them straight away, marked as pending.

Two things to expect:

  • The amount can change. Restaurants add tips, petrol stations pre-authorise more than you spend. The figure settles when the bank confirms it.

  • Some disappear. A pending charge your bank cancels will vanish from your list, because it never happened.

Transfers between your own accounts

If you move money between two accounts you have connected, your bank reports it twice: as money leaving one account and arriving in the other.

Vault does not pair them automatically. Until you do, reports will count the outgoing side as an expense.

To fix it, select both transactions and choose Change to transfer.

Connecting the same account in two workspaces

This depends on the bank.

  • European banks (Enable Banking). You can connect the same account in several workspaces. Each workspace has its own bank authorisation, so disconnecting it in one does not affect the others.

  • Monobank. Only one workspace at a time. Connecting the same Monobank in a second workspace stops the connection in the first, which then shows Reconnect needed.

If you need the same accounts visible to more than one person, invite them to your workspace instead of connecting separately.

If your bank is not in the list

First check Supported banks, and search for your bank when you connect: the search in the app is always the most up to date. Coverage depends on which banks support open banking in your country and which of them our provider has connected. The list changes as more become available.

Tell us which bank you need. Open the chat from the bottom right corner of this page and say which bank and which country. We look at every request, and what people ask for is what decides which banks we add next — a bank nobody mentions is a bank we have no reason to prioritise.

If it turns out your bank cannot be connected at all, we will tell you that plainly rather than leave you waiting. You can also write to [email protected] if you prefer email.

In the meantime you can create the account manually and enter transactions yourself — nothing is lost, and if the bank becomes available later you can connect it then.

When access needs renewing

European banks grant access for a limited period, often 90 or 180 days, as open banking rules require. When it runs out, data stops refreshing until you renew it. Vault does not warn you in advance yet.

Monobank access does not expire on its own. It stops only if it is revoked — for example, when you remove Vault's access in Monobank or connect the same Monobank in another workspace.

Either way, the account card shows a red dot and Reconnect needed. Open the account menu and choose Reconnect. Your existing accounts come back with their history, categories and notes, and transactions you missed are filled in.

Pausing an account

You can pause an account you do not want to watch for a while.

What pausing hides is new activity, not the account. Everything already in your workspace stays where it is — in the transaction list, in reports, in your figures. Transactions that arrive after you pause keep importing but stay hidden, and the balance holds where it was.

When you resume, everything that arrived in between appears at once.

Other accounts at the same bank are unaffected. Pause one of three and the other two keep updating normally.

Pausing the last active account disconnects the bank. While at least one account at a bank is active, the connection counts against your plan. When you pause the last one, the connection is disconnected and its slot is freed. Your balances and history stay. To start receiving data again, use Reconnect and confirm access with your bank once more.

Disconnecting a bank

Disconnect connection stops sync for every account at that bank and frees its slot in your plan. Nothing is lost: history, categories, notes and the last balance stay, and the accounts remain bank accounts rather than becoming manual.

It is fully reversible. When you Reconnect, the same accounts come back with their history and the missed period is filled in. This is the way to free a slot — for example, to move to a smaller plan — without losing anything.

For Monobank, disconnecting stops Vault's side only. Monobank does not let services withdraw access themselves, so you can remove it in Monobank — see Connecting Monobank.

Converting to manual

Converting an account to manual keeps everything already imported and stops the connection feeding it. From then on you maintain it yourself, as if you had created it by hand.

This cannot be undone. To get automatic updates back you would connect the bank again as a new connection.

If the account was paused, transactions from the pause period are deleted rather than revealed — they were never shown, and converting is how you say you do not want them. Pending amounts become final.

Deleting an account

Deleting an account removes it along with its transactions. This cannot be undone.

When no connected accounts remain at a bank, after converting or deleting, the connection is removed and its slot is freed.

Plan changes and payments

  • Downgrading in the app. If you have more bank connections than the new plan allows, Vault asks which ones to disconnect when the new plan takes effect.

  • Cancelling. Connections above the new plan's limit disconnect — all of them on Free. The card says Disconnected due to plan limits.

  • A payment fails. Data keeps syncing while the payment is retried. If all attempts fail, connections disconnect with Disconnected after payment attempts ended, and the workspace becomes read-only until the subscription is restored or you switch to Free.

  • The trial ends without a paid plan. Connections disconnect with The trial has ended, and the workspace becomes read-only until you choose a plan or switch to Free.

Nothing you already have is lost. Your accounts, transaction history, categories and notes stay exactly as they were.

Paying again does not reconnect banks on its own. Once you are back on a plan that includes them, use Reconnect on each bank you need. The same accounts come back and the missed period is filled in.
