Vault connects to banks in Europe through Enable Banking, a licensed open banking provider. This article walks you through adding a European bank step by step and explains what happens after it's connected. For how bank connections work in general, see Connecting a bank account.
What the connection does
You sign in on your bank's own page, never in Vault. Vault doesn't see or store your banking password. Your bank asks you to confirm which accounts Vault may read, and for how long.
Access is read-only. Vault can see your accounts, balances and transactions. It can't make payments or move money.
One connection is one bank. A single connection can include several accounts at that bank, and it uses one bank-connection slot in your plan no matter how many accounts it includes.
Before you start
Bank connections are available on paid plans. New workspaces get a 14-day Pro trial with no card required, so you can try them straight away.
Plan | Bank connections |
Free | Not included |
Basic | 2 |
Pro | 10 |
Enterprise | Agreed individually |
You'll also need:
permission to manage accounts in the workspace;
your online banking login or banking app at hand, since the bank will ask you to sign in;
a few minutes. Once you've confirmed access at the bank, you have 24 hours to finish choosing accounts in Vault.
How to connect
On the dashboard, click Add account and open the Bank tab.
Under the data provider, choose European banks (via Enable Banking).
Set the Start date: how far back Vault should import transactions. You can go up to 720 days back or use the 30, 90 and 180-day shortcuts. Then click Add account.
Search for your bank by name or country code (for example, FI), choose it, and pick the Account type: Personal or Business.
Click Connect bank. Your bank opens in a new tab. If your browser blocks the new tab, click Go to bank ↗.
At the bank, sign in, choose the accounts you want to share and confirm. You'll see Access confirmed, and the tab closes on its own. If it doesn't, close it and return to Vault.
Back in Vault, under Available accounts, tick the accounts you want and click Add selected accounts.
The new accounts appear on your dashboard straight away. The card shows Importing transactions while history loads, then a green dot once it's synced. In our tests a first import of a few hundred transactions took under a minute.
What you may see in the account list:
Already added: this account is already in your workspace.
Bank access unavailable: the bank didn't share this account. To add it, start again and select it at the bank.
A multi-currency account appears as one account per currency.
Changed your mind halfway? Use Start again or the back button in the dialog rather than closing the window. That ends the bank session right away; closing the window leaves it open at the bank for up to 24 hours.
Which banks are available
The list shows the banks Enable Banking supports for Vault. If you can't find yours, write to us in the chat or at [email protected].
How much history you get
Vault asks the bank for history back to the start date you chose. Some banks give less than that. In that case the card says The bank limited the available history, and earlier transactions may be missing. You can add them manually if you need them.
How often data updates
Vault checks the bank about every 6 hours, so new transactions usually appear within a few hours.
To check sooner, open the account menu and choose Retry sync. You'll see Sync queued. A manual sync restarts the 6-hour timer, so the next automatic check comes 6 hours after it.
If the bank temporarily limits requests, Vault waits and tries again later. Nothing needs to be done on your side.
Pending transactions
Card payments that haven't settled yet are imported as Pending. They're shown tinted and are counted in your totals. When the bank books the payment, the same transaction updates in place, with no duplicate. If the bank cancels or rejects it, it disappears.
Which date you see
Vault shows the date of each transaction, without the time of day. It uses the transaction date when the bank provides it, and otherwise the value date.
Some banks, such as Erste, don't send a transaction date. For them a card payment made late in the evening can show the next day's date, the day the bank processed it.
Balance
Vault shows the booked balance your bank reports.
If the card shows — instead of a balance, the bank hasn't provided a confirmed balance yet. Transactions are still imported. Your total balance then reads Incomplete total and lists the accounts it leaves out.
Reviewing bank transactions
Occasionally a bank sends entries Vault can't import with certainty, for example when it reuses one reference for different payments. The card then shows a red dot: Some bank entries could not be imported reliably and need review. Everything else is imported as usual.
Open the account menu and choose Review bank transactions.
For each entry, choose the matching transaction, the one with the same amount and date, and click Confirm. Categories and notes on that transaction stay as they are.
Choose This is a new transaction only if it's genuinely a separate payment. If a transaction with the same amount and date already exists, Vault asks you to tick I checked: this is a separate payment, not a duplicate.
Your choice is remembered, so the same entries won't come back for review.
When bank access expires
Banks grant access for a limited time, often 90 or 180 days, after which you confirm it again. Vault doesn't warn you in advance yet.
When access ends, the card shows a red dot and Reconnect needed. Your history stays in Vault. To restore the connection:
Open the account menu and choose Reconnect.
Choose the same bank as before.
At the bank, grant access to all the accounts that were connected before. You can add new ones too.
Back in Vault, tick any new accounts you want to add (or none) and click Reconnect bank.
Your existing accounts are matched automatically and keep their history, categories and notes. Transactions you missed while disconnected are filled in. You'll see Access restored for N accounts.
Pausing, disconnecting and removing
All of these are in the account card's menu.
Action | What happens | Plan slot |
Pause integration | Earlier transactions stay visible. New ones keep arriving but stay hidden until you resume. The balance freezes. | Still used, unless it's the last active account at that bank. Then the connection disconnects and the slot is freed. |
Resume integration | Transactions from the paused period appear in lists, reports and totals. | Used |
Disconnect connection | Sync stops for every account at that bank. History and annotations stay, and the last balance is shown. Reconnecting needs new bank authorization. | Freed |
Reconnect | Brings back the same accounts with their history. See above. | Used again |
Convert to manual | The account becomes manual for good. Visible history stays; hidden transactions from a pause are deleted; pending amounts become final. Can't be undone. | Freed when no connected accounts remain |
Delete | The account and all its transactions are removed. Can't be undone. | Freed when no connected accounts remain |
Need a free slot without losing anything? Use Disconnect connection. It's fully reversible.
Plan changes and payments
Downgrading in the app. If you have more bank connections than the new plan allows, Vault asks which ones to disconnect. History stays, and you can reconnect later.
Cancelling. Connections above the new plan's limit disconnect (all of them on Free). The card says Disconnected due to plan limits. Subscribing again doesn't reconnect them on its own: use Reconnect on each one you need.
A payment fails. Data keeps syncing while the payment is retried. If all attempts fail, connections disconnect with Disconnected after payment attempts ended, and the workspace becomes read-only until the subscription is restored or you switch to Free.
The trial ends without a paid plan. Connections disconnect with The trial has ended, and the workspace becomes read-only until you choose a plan or switch to Free.
In every case your history stays in Vault.
The same account in two workspaces
You can connect the same bank account in different workspaces. Each one has its own bank authorization, so disconnecting it in one workspace doesn't affect the other. Within one workspace, an account can only be connected once.
